Matthijs De Block
Binnen het project Y.E.A.S.T.

Matthijs De Block is a Belgian artist working at the intersection of contemporary art, biotechnology and ecological research. His practice critically examines the ethical, aesthetic and societal implications of living systems, particularly those shaped by synthetic biology, genetic modification and microbial processes. Driven by an interest in hybridity and more-than-human perspectives, he challenges dominant ideas about nature, identity and control.
Central to his work is a long-standing collaboration with Dr. Tom Peeters, synthetic biologist and head of the Research Centre for Preventive Health Innovation at Erasmus Brussels University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Together, they build a bridge between artistic experimentation and scientific research. Within the project Y.E.A.S.T. (Yielding Ecology, Art, Science & Togetherness), supported by Innoviris, Brucker & Bûûmplanters, they investigate the ecology of wild yeasts on Brussels fruit trees, where fermentation becomes both a research method and a shared language to explore biodiversity, urban ecosystems and new forms of knowledge production.
