Tom Peeters

Tom Peeters is a researcher and lecturer in biotechnology & microbiology at Erasmus Brussels University of Applied Sciences and Arts. He obtained his PhD in biotechnology, researching signal transduction in yeast, and worked as a postdoctoral researcher on genetically engineered yeast cells functioning as building blocks for biological computers, an experience that firmly cemented his fascination with synthetic biology.
As an advocate of DIY-bio and open science, he founded Open BioLab Brussels, a low-threshold lab that makes (bio)science accessible to a diverse audience, and where entrepreneurs and artists can turn ideas into proof-of-concepts. His interests span applied and synthetic biology, STEAM education and bio-art. A combination that directly connects to his collaboration with artist Matthijs De Block on Y.E.A.S.T., in which wild Brussels yeasts form the core of a living artwork. The project is supported by Innoviris, Brucker & Bûûmplanters.
